ESWT Therapy (Shockwave Therapy)
Unlike the current, conventional drug-based therapy, shockwave therapy generated electromagnetically for erectile dysfunction is an innovative medical treatment that addresses the cause of ED, not just its symptoms. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the result of poor blood flow to the penis and affects over 40% of men over the age of 40.
Shockwave therapy is the only non-invasive treatment available to restore the normal erectile function of the penis. Multiple studies have shown that most men experience a significant improvement in sexual performance after treatment, with no risk of side effects. As the only clinic exclusively dedicated to men's sexual health and one of the few clinics in Europe offering this procedure, we have been performing shockwave therapy for over four years. The procedure is endorsed by the European Association of Urology (EAU) as the only effective non-medicated treatment for erectile dysfunction, being officially recognized in the European guidelines for urological medical practice and validated by the experience of multiple European medical clinics. It has been scientifically proven that low-intensity shockwaves stimulate the formation of new blood vessels in the penile corpora cavernosa, leading to improved arterial blood flow and enhanced erection parameters.
Erectile dysfunction treatment can be approached on three levels.
The first approach is medication-based, with products available on the market from the group known as phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors. These drugs facilitate an adequate erection through a local penile vasodilatory mechanism, provided they are taken approximately one hour before sexual activity. However, this method comes with certain drawbacks, such as significant side effects—headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, facial flushing, and the restriction of use in combination with nitrate-based medications used to treat angina. Additionally, in many cases, the body may not respond to these vasodilators, making their administration ineffective.
Other groups of medications can be administered via penile injection by the patient before sexual activity, inducing artificial vasodilation to facilitate an erection. However, many patients are reluctant to self-inject, fearing (rightfully so) potential risks during administration—such as perforation of a major artery leading to uncontrolled bleeding, urethral perforation, or the creation of an abnormal connection between an artery and a penile vein, which can result in a prolonged, painful erection that, in many cases, can become a serious medical emergency.
Another treatment option includes invasive surgical methods, such as penile revascularization procedures or the implantation of inflatable penile prostheses. However, these approaches come with significant disadvantages, including high costs and aesthetic drawbacks.
However, for patients diagnosed with vascular-related erectile dysfunction, there is a new type of treatment that is effective, painless, and non-invasive.
ESWT Technology using shockwaves is not entirely new; however, it has gained wider adoption in recent years due to technological advancements that have refined the equipment used to deliver ultrasound waves.
Shockwave therapy is used to treat arterial-related erectile dysfunction, which accounts for over 50% of cases. Additionally, the therapy typically requires only one session, possibly two or three times per year, and in many cases, the effects can last for several years.
HOW DOES ESWT THERAPY TREAT?
Shockwave therapy for erectile dysfunction is delivered using a medical device manufactured by Storz – Switzerland, which emits low-intensity shockwaves (Li-ESWT). These electromagnetically generated waves stimulate the formation of new arterial blood vessels by mobilizing pluripotent cells at the application site (the penile corpora cavernosa), leading to the regeneration of the pre-existing vascular network. This process is further enhanced by the natural secretion of vascular growth factors, triggered as a physiological response of the local tissues to the action of the shockwaves. The procedure is completely painless, with no discomfort during or after treatment.
The successful use of extracorporeal shockwaves is well-documented across various fields of medicine, including cardiology, physiotherapy, urology, and pain management.
BENEFITS
- Shockwave therapy offers new possibilities for the direct treatment of the organic causes of erectile dysfunction.
- The treatment goes beyond symptom management—it restores natural, spontaneous sexual health.
- The treatment offers a high level of safety, effectiveness (over 80% success rate), and confidentiality.
- There are no risks for men with concurrent medical conditions.
- Effectiveness varies from patient to patient, depending on the individual's response to the treatment.
- An important benefit of this therapy is the scientifically proven fact that patients who undergo ESWT therapy regain sensitivity to conventional medication.

Regardless of age, ESWT therapy can significantly improve performance, even in the absence of a specific condition.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT ESWT TECHNIQUE
No, not at all. It is more like a sound wave rather than an electric shockwave. Men do not feel anything during the procedure. The only possible side effect may be a temporary, localized tingling sensation due to increased blood flow.
Yes. This procedure utilizes a technology that has been proven effective in other fields of medicine, including medical rehabilitation, urology (kidney stone treatment), and diabetic foot therapy. It is painless, requires no recovery time after treatment, and has no known side effects or complications.
You can expect to be in and out of the clinic within 30 minutes. The procedure itself takes approximately 15 minutes.
Positive results can appear within a variable timeframe—sometimes during the treatment itself, while in other cases, improvements may take up to 6-12 months, depending on how quickly the body forms new arterial blood vessels. In some cases, additional treatment sessions may be required beyond the initial 12 bi-weekly sessions.
In case of unsuccessful results, additional therapy options may be recommended, such as:
Local PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) injections
Combination with oral or injectable medication
Use of a vacuum erection device
Stem cell injections (in selected cases)
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy sessions
These complementary approaches can help enhance the effectiveness of the treatment for certain patients.
It is recommended to undergo 8-12 sessions, performed twice a week. Your doctor will discuss the best protocol based on your condition to determine the most suitable treatment plan for you.
Yes! Regardless of age, ESWT therapy can enhance sexual performance, even in the absence of a specific condition.
