ESWT Therapy (Shockwave Therapy)

ESWT shockwave technology is the most modern treatment method for chronic prostatitis. It is non-invasive, completely painless, and free of side effects. Before the emergence of this technology, the conventional treatment for chronic prostatitis relied solely on antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications. The major drawback was that, despite medication, the condition often recurred. By incorporating ESWT therapy, patients can achieve complete recovery or experience long-term symptom remission for months or even years.

Shockwave therapy is the only non-invasive treatment offered to restore the normal structure and metabolism of prostate tissue. Numerous studies have shown that most men experience a significant improvement in quality of life after treatment, with urinary symptoms either disappearing or being reduced to a minimum. As one of the few clinics in Romania offering this procedure, we have been performing shockwave therapy for over five years. The procedure has been endorsed by the E.A.U. (European Association of Urology) as the only effective non-pharmacological therapy for chronic prostatitis, being listed as such in the European guidelines for urological practice and validated by the experience of several European medical clinics. Scientific evidence shows that low-intensity shockwaves stimulate the formation of new blood vessels within the prostate tissue, restoring normal gland metabolism and eliminating the effects of chronic inflammation.

Ultrasonic waves are applied during 15-minute sessions to the perineal area, with a precisely focused depth to effectively reach the deep layers of the prostate gland.

The shockwaves deliver a high amount of focused energy at a depth of approximately 3-4 cm, inducing tissue remodeling and revascularization. This process stimulates specific biochemical reactions, leading to the restoration of the affected prostatic structure and a significant reduction in urinary symptoms.

HOW DOES ESWT THERAPY TREAT CHRONIC PROSTATITIS?

The treatment of bacterial prostatitis is currently performed using a combined therapy, consisting of ESWT therapy along with antibiotics to eliminate bacteria from the urethra. If symptoms are severe, a specialist may recommend intravenous antibiotic administration, along with anti-inflammatory drugs, prostatic trophic agents, and medications that facilitate urination (such as alpha-blockers). The treatment duration typically ranges from 4 to 6 weeks, and it is crucial that the patient follows the prescribed regimen for the entire recommended period, even if symptoms improve within the first few days.

There are also natural treatments for prostatitis that can help alleviate symptoms. These include warm baths and compresses, as well as various types of herbal teas. Tea made from Epilobium (willow herb), hawthorn, nettle, and plantain are some natural alternatives that may have a beneficial effect on this condition, along with propolis.

During the treatment, the patient should avoid alcohol, caffeine, and spicy foods, as they can irritate the bladder.

- - The treatment is performed using ultrasonic waves applied to the perineal area, precisely focused to penetrate the prostate gland.
  - The sessions last 15 minutes.
  - 4 to 6 sessions per week are performed.
  - Sometimes (10-20% of cases), symptoms may return, but with lower intensity over a period of several months or years. In such cases, 2 to 4 maintenance sessions can be performed, providing a long-lasting effect.

REQUIRED INVESTIGATIONS

Urine tests
These are necessary to help the specialist determine whether a urinary infection is present or not. Uroflowmetry (urine flow measurement) is also required, as this test measures the pressure of the urine flow. Through these tests and analyses, obstructions in the prostate, urethra, or pelvic muscles can be detected.
Blood tests
They may be necessary for an accurate diagnosis of prostatitis. Blood tests can also indicate signs of a possible infection or prostate-related issues.
Imaging investigations
A CT scan of the urinary tract can be highly useful in diagnosing prostatitis, as it provides high-accuracy images that assist the specialist. Ultrasound imaging of the urinary system is also valuable for diagnosis.
If not diagnosed in time, prostatitis can lead to acute urinary retention, infertility, and severe dysfunctions of the reproductive system.
